Sfântul Ilie este una dintre cele mai importante figuri din istoria Vechiului Testament.
După cum indică și numele („Iahve este Dumnezeul meu”), Sf. Ilie a fost liderul de succes în lupta de a păstra cunoașterea și închinarea lui Iahve împotriva închinării lui Baal introduse în Israel de Izabela, soția din Tiria a regelui Ahab.
Narațiunile despre Sf. Ilie includ, pe lângă lupta de mai sus, minuni, denunțări ale regilor și o pregătire pentru rolul profetului ca precursor eshatologic al „marii zile a Domnului” (Matei 17 : 10).

St. Elijah is one of the most important figures in Old Testament history.
As the name indicates ("Yahweh is my God"), Elijah was the successful leader in the struggle to preserve the knowledge and worship of Yahweh against the encroaching worship of Baal introduced into Israel by Jezebel, the Tyrian wife of King Ahab.
The Elijah cycle of narratives includes, besides the above struggle, miracles stories, denunciations of kings, and a preparation for the prophet's role as eschatological forerunner of the "great day of the Lord" (Matthew 17 :10).
